Secrets & Love Letters
Edwardian Londoners would have sent Valentine's cards to one another. Perhaps even a secret admirer would have revealed themselves. However, in Benandante, this happens quite a bit later. Even though Ezra Morgan falls fast for Effie, he doesn't inform her. Does he delay out of respect for her recent widowhood? Is he too timid? Or do the dangers of the Abyss take precidence over love?
You'll have to read to find out. But what I can say is that Effie is not completely immune to his charms by the end of the book. While their first meeting didn't give her the best impression, his constant presence (though mostly unwanted) becomes a comfort.
Look for tropes of reluctant allies and he falls first in this Edwardian fantasy.
