The Magic of Benandante

There are at least four planes of existence in Benandante: Heaven, Earth, the Netherworld, and the Abyss. The three that feature most prominently in the book are the last three. The Abyss is the equivalent of Hell. But the Netherworld is this in between space. It is the battleground for the two witch factions, Benandanti and Streghe.

The Netherworld is a copy of our plane with a few exceptions. No life exists there. The setting is war-torn, dilapidated, and faded.

The exception is the Meadow. Set apart from the rest of the Netherworld is a space just for the Benandanti to gather. Magic protects it from Streghe and even the Benandanti can only find and enter it when their souls are called there on feast days. Here, there is color and life. It is important for the Benandanti to have a place to gather because of the distance between them. Each Benandante is responsible for a territory in our world. There are Benandanti all over the world, which can make it difficult to communicate.

Benandanti don't have much power in our world. But in the Netherworld, they can call upon the elements to defend their territory. Each Benandante has an item that channels the spells. For Effie, this is her hatpin.

Fighting in the Netherworld can prove difficult. Effie knows this perhaps more than most. Her failure cost her husband his life.
